Settling In
We aim to be as flexible as possible with the settling in period when your child starts nursery. We want your child to feel safe and happy in the absence of their parents/carer, to recognise other adults as a source of authority, help and friendship, and also to share with their parents/carers afterwards the new learning experiences enjoyed in the nursery.
In order to accomplish this we will:
- Encourage parents to visit the nursery during the weeks before an admission is planned.
- Make clear to families from the outset that they will be supported in the nursery for as long as it takes to settle their child in.
- Aim to work in partnership with parents with regard to the settling in of a child to the nursery setting. Each family will have differing needs, with regards to time available to spend with their child, during the early days in the nursery. We understand and will be sympathetic to the needs of the family at the time of registration.
- Reassure parents whose children seem to be taken longer time to settling into the nursery.
- Encourage where appropriate, to separate from their children for brief periods at first, gradually building up to longer absences.
- Children cannot play or learn successfully if they are anxious or unhappy. Our settling in procedures aim to help parents to help their children to feel comfortable in the nursery, to benefit from what it has to offer, and to be confident that their parents will return at the end of the session.
We do work in partnership with parents and do appreciate this can be a very difficult time leaving your child, therefore we do encourage you to call the nursery to find out how your child is settling.
