What to look for when choosing a nursery

As childcare professionals, The Bertram Group nurseries recognise that choosing a nursery for your child/children is one of the most important and possibly most difficult decisions you may make.

To help in your decision making we have listed some examples of what to ask and look for:

  • What are the opening hours?
  • What is the staff turnover like?
  • Can I look round all rooms and outside play?
  • Where my child will sleep?
  • What food and drink is provided?
  • Routine of the day and handovers (What information will I be given)?
  • How do you promote good manners and positive behaviour?
  • Are you a partner provider?
  • How will I know how my child is progressing?
  • Do you hold parents evenings?

Things to look out for:

  • Are staff friendly and sitting at the children’s level
  • Are there plenty of examples of children’s work displayed
  • Is the resources and equipment appropriate for the age group
  • Is the resources well maintained
  • Are the premises clean, well kept and safe
  • Is their positive interaction with staff /child and staff/staff

Key areas for parents choosing a nursery:

  • Location, parking
  • Local amenities (Trains, Buses etc)
  • Fees
  • Outside availability
  • Provision of meals
  • Daily updates of childs progress/activities
  • Staff turnover
  • Staff qualifications
